Q) As a person with a disability, why should I exercise?
A) There are lots of reasons to exercise and many of them are the same for people with disabilities as they are for people without disabilities. In short, the body benefits from physical exercise. Not only do the outer muscles that you can see (such as the biceps, et al.) get stronger, sturdier and more dependable, but the muscles that you can’t see (such as the heart, et al.) also benefit. You can become healthier in general and your cardiovascular system will also improve which is important to everyone.
[ top ]
Q) I figure I get plenty of exercise pushing myself around in a wheelchair all day. Do I really need more?
A) Pushing your wheelchair gets your arms and shoulders some exercise but not all other parts of your body. Exercising your legs (e.g., by riding a stationary bike) can lead to improved muscle strength, tone, coordination, etc. as well as the cardiovascular improvement mentioned above.
[ top ]
Q) I use a power wheelchair all day and have a tough time getting out of it. What can I do to get some exercise?
A) There are videos of exercises that people can do from a sitting position to increase the internal and external well-being of their bodies. According to the National Center on Physical Activity and Disability (NCPAD) “The important thing is not what you do, but that you do something” (for more information about NCPAD, visit them on the web at www.ncpad.org). You can find some of these videos at www.activevideos.com, www.amazon.com and other websites. (Note: Not all of these videos have the word “wheelchair” in the title, so if you are searching a website for one you may get better results searching for ‘seated exercise,’ ‘senior exercise’ or similar phrases.)
[ top ]
Q) What are some guidelines to consider when planning an exercise program?
A) NCPAD provides an extensive list of guidelines at www.ncpad.org/exercise/fact_sheet.php?sheet=15.
[ top ]
Q) What are some websites and/or organizations where I can get more information about physical exercise and people with disabilities?
A) These are just a few; there are many others in addition to those listed below.

For more information on these and other activities, contact your local park's information office. Most parks publish a directory of their programs and activities as well as a schedule of events and classes that they offer. Their directories are an excellent way for one to discover what opportunities are available.
Sports and Recreation groups host a wide variety of activities. They normally have a staff of individuals to help consumers. By joining an organization you will have an opportunity to experience more activities as well as meet other people interested in the same types of sports and recreation that you are. There is normally a membership fee required which is often very low.
