Of the four, core independent living services at the ENDependence Center of Northern Virginia, Inc. (ECNV) (peer counseling, independent living skills training, advocacy and information&referral) by far the most frequently utilized service is information and referral. Thousands of volunteer and staff hours per year are dedicated to providing individuals with disabilities and the community with referrals to area resources and information about disability-related services. As information and referral is a primary, core ECNV service,
ECNV sought to place this valuable resource literally at the core of the
Center itself. The ECNV Disability Library is a collection of disability-related
printed and multi-media videos, periodicals, disability-specific subscriptions,
peer-based advice and answers to Frequently
Asked Questions (FAQs). Additionally ECNV maintains three computers
for drop-in use by all consumers with disabilities to access the Internet
for information searches or to just refine their resume in a word processing
program. Our goal is to maintain a dependable and up-to-date community resource that is easily accessed by all segments of the community, regardless of whether ECNV is actually open or not. To that end, significant effort is being directed toward inputting the date from our library into a format that is accessible from our website: www.ecnv.org and to linking ECNV with local library systems. |
