Annual Awards Reception Will Salute Leaders And Bring the Community Together June 11
By Brewster Thackeray, ECNV Executive Director
Last year's ECNV Annual Awards Reception was a highlight of my first year with ECNV, and I'm glad we decided to massage the successful recipe in 2015. Seeing so many advocates and community members support independent living keeps the energy of our movement and our office going. This year's event is going to be one to remember. We are celebrating three important disability milestones: the 25th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the 30th Anniversary of the Virginians with Disabilities Act, and the 50th Anniversary of the Medicare and Medicaid programs. To top it all off, we are honored to have Virginia State Senator Toddy Puller accept the ECNV Lifetime Achievement Award for her years of service representing the disability community.
We are also pleased to be presenting two additional awards this year. The new ECNV Model of Independence Award will be presented to Diana Urquiza, an ECNV mentee who personifies the independent living mission. With a lot of perseverance and guidance from ECNV Peer Mentor Alexa Mavroidis, Diana moved out of a nursing home and is now living independently in Falls Church. Diana also performed at our Home for the Holidays Reception and spoke on ECNV's behalf during our ADA Tour event.
ECNV will present our Business Partner Award to P.F. Chang's Arlington
. The restaurant and its operating partner Tony Bass are being saluted for innovative and ongoing support of ECNV over the past year. Not only did they donate food for hundreds of people for the ECNV Home for the Holidays Reception and the ADA Legacy Tour, they also are sponsoring this event as ECNV Friends and with silent auction gift certificates. ECNV is grateful for P.F. Chang's support – and for the role model of community outreach they provide for other businesses.
The Clarendon Ballroom
