Let’s Chat

On Saturday, September 17, ECNV staff Andrew and Elaine Shaw decided to check out the Northern Virginia Resource Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Persons (NVRC) Celebrate Communication Fair held at the Springfield Town Center.

They were impressed with two free apps for communicating with their deaf/hard of hearing friends:

  • Clear Captions is a federally managed program and free service that displays the callers’ words in near real-time. This service is available for home and mobile device calling and has lifetime support.
  • Naglish (Hebrew for ‘Accessible’) lets you take phone calls using text instead of or in addition to using voice. It is fast, intuitive, and free.

NVRC hosts free informal social groups for those who wish to converse in ASL with others. All skill levels are welcome and encouraged to attend. They have breakout rooms for small group practice too! Chats are held the first and third Saturdays for the remainder of 2022. Register for Saturday Socials or Tuesday Socials (or both!). NVRC also hosts weekly ASL socials for Deaf Seniors and ASL students.
